My knees hit the cold hospital floor before I even realized I had stopped standing.<\/p>\n

The phone slipped in my hands, but Rocky caught it before it fell.<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t breathe.<\/p>\n

On the screen was security camera footage from Claire\u2019s high school.<\/p>\n

The timestamp read 3:47 p.m.<\/p>\n

Claire was standing alone in the hallway outside the library.<\/p>\n

I recognized the oversized gray hoodie she wore almost every day.<\/p>\n

Then three students walked toward her.<\/p>\n

It was a recording Claire had made herself.<\/p>\n

She was sitting in her bedroom.<\/p>\n

Her face looked thinner than I remembered.<\/p>\n

She smiled at the camera anyway.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re watching this\u2026 it means I\u2019m probably in the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n

My entire body froze.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom isn\u2019t supposed to know I made these.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her voice sounded calm.<\/p>\n

Too calm for a sixteen-year-old.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe already worries too much.\u201d<\/p>\n

I covered my mouth.<\/p>\n

The truth was nothing like I imagined<\/p>\n

Claire looked directly into the camera.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know everyone thinks those kids hate me.\u201d<\/p>\n

She smiled sadly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey did.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at Rocky.<\/p>\n

Claire continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe thought nobody saw him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe told me his dad had cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rocky broke down completely.<\/p>\n

\u201cI promised I wouldn\u2019t tell anyone,\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n

Claire had kept his secret.<\/p>\n

Then she started talking about everyone else<\/p>\n

She held up a notebook.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wrote down everyone\u2019s birthdays.\u201d<\/p>\n

She laughed softly.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd everyone\u2019s favorite candy.\u201d<\/p>\n

I remembered that notebook.<\/p>\n

I thought it was homework.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

Claire had been writing notes for her classmates.<\/p>\n

One for each person.<\/p>\n

Encouraging them before exams.<\/p>\n

Congratulating them after games.<\/p>\n

Checking on them after family problems.<\/p>\n

Even the students who had bullied her.<\/p>\n

Rocky finally told me the part Claire never would<\/p>\n

\u201cShe volunteered every afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe tutored us.\u201d<\/p>\n

I frowned.<\/p>\n

Rocky looked toward Claire\u2019s room.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe helped me pass algebra.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe helped Megan after her mom left.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe helped Tyler write college essays.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe never told anybody.\u201d<\/p>\n

The class found out only after she disappeared<\/p>\n

The day Claire was admitted to the hospital, her locker was cleaned out.<\/p>\n

Inside was a folder.<\/p>\n

Every student\u2019s name was on a separate envelope.<\/p>\n

Each envelope contained a handwritten letter.<\/p>\n

Rocky pulled one from his backpack.<\/p>\n

The edges were worn from being folded so many times.<\/p>\n
