Three adult passengers.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Two children.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Seat assignments.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Hotel confirmation.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Paid activities.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">All arranged in advance.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cHow long have they known?\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWeeks.\u201d She placed the paper down.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cAnd nobody thought to tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cApparently not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Evelyn studied me.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cYou\u2019re very calm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI\u2019ve spent the morning trying to decide whether I\u2019m entitled to be angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Her expression changed.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cYou\u2019re entitled to feel whatever you feel.\u201d I looked toward the stove.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThat doesn\u2019t tell me what I should do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">She pulled out a chair.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThen tell me what you want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I thought.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Not revenge.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Not a public argument. Not an elaborate surprise when Daniel returned.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I wanted to know whether I still had a life that belonged to me.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI want to leave,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Evelyn didn\u2019t smile.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Didn\u2019t congratulate me.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Didn\u2019t tell me it was overdue.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">She asked:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cFor a few days?\u201d \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cFor good?\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">She looked toward the blue folder.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThen we need to be careful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I nodded.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Arthur would have said exactly the same thing.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">My husband had spent thirty-eight years working for the city before retiring. He was practical, methodical, and mildly irritating about paperwork.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">We owned a modest home in northern Arizona.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Nothing spectacular.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Three bedrooms.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A small garage.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A backyard where Arthur grew tomatoes that were usually eaten by birds.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">We raised Daniel there.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Paid the mortgage.
