Daniel watched.<\/p>\n

Emily could not read his expression anymore.<\/p>\n

Maybe that was good.<\/p>\n

She had spent too much of their marriage trying.<\/p>\n

Before everyone left, Daniel asked through his attorney whether he could speak with the boys.<\/p>\n

The answer was not immediate.<\/p>\n

That alone seemed to affect him.<\/p>\n

Until that morning, Daniel had behaved as though access, authority, and credibility naturally belonged to him.<\/p>\n

No instant collapse of Daniel\u2019s case.<\/p>\n

Just three statements from two children that demanded examination.<\/p>\n

Emily realized that was enough for now.<\/p>\n

The recorder did not need to become a magical object that solved every problem.<\/p>\n

It only needed to be handled carefully enough that whatever truth it contained could not be replaced by anybody\u2019s preferred version.<\/p>\n

Not Daniel\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Not hers.<\/p>\n

When Emily finally stepped into the courthouse hallway, the rain was still falling.<\/p>\n
