Chapter 1 \u2014 You Deserved It<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIf my parents hit you, there must have been a good reason.<\/p>\n

You know how they are.<\/p>\n

You provoked them by refusing to hand over the money.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those were the first words my husband said to me when he walked into my hospital room.<\/p>\n

Not\u00a0how are you feeling.<\/em>\u00a0Not\u00a0I\u2019m so sorry.<\/em>\u00a0He sat down in the visitor\u2019s chair beside my bed and looked at me as though I were an inconvenient household problem he had come to sort out.<\/p>\n

I will not describe, in this story, exactly what had put me in that hospital bed the night before.<\/p>\n

I lived through it once, and that was enough, and the people who did it do not deserve to have their violence retold in loving detail for anyone\u2019s entertainment.<\/p>\n

It is enough to say that the night before, my husband\u2019s parents had beaten me badly enough that a neighbor called an ambulance, and that I woke in a hospital, and that the first human being from my own family to arrive at my side had come not to comfort me but to finish the job his parents had started, with words instead of hands.<\/p>\n

We had been married for ten years.<\/p>\n

And in the space of that single sentence \u2014\u00a0there must have been a good reason<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 the whole architecture of those ten years, which I had spent a decade calling love, showed me, at last, what it had actually been.<\/p>\n

I said nothing to Bruno.<\/p>\n

But from that hospital bed, with my left eye swollen shut and my whole body one deep ache, I had already begun, in silence, to do the thing that would end all of them.<\/p>\n

I had begun to plan.<\/p>\n

Chapter 2 \u2014 Ten Years<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ten years.<\/p>\n

That is how long I endured his family before the night everything broke.<\/p>\n
