Chapter 1 \u2014 The Room Without Air<\/strong><\/p>\n

By the time Marisol Vega realized the upstairs cooling had been shut off again, the temperature in her bedroom office had climbed high enough that the back of her blouse was damp against her shoulders.<\/p>\n

Outside, a brutal July afternoon pressed against Savannah, the thermometer near ninety-five, sunlight pouring through the tall windows of the house her father had left her six years earlier.<\/p>\n

She was preparing for a video meeting that had already been rescheduled once.<\/p>\n

Her laptop sat open beside her notes and a glass of water and the headset she had tested fifteen minutes before.<\/p>\n

She opened the thermostat app on her phone and saw that the master-bedroom zone had been disabled, manually, again.<\/p>\n

She walked into the hallway and found her mother-in-law, Gwendolyn Thorpe, standing beside the wall-mounted thermostat with a satisfied expression.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you turn off the upstairs cooling?\u201d Marisol asked, stopping a few feet away.<\/p>\n

Gwendolyn folded her arms.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no reason to cool half the house because you want to sit upstairs behind a closed door all afternoon.\u201d \u201cI told you this morning I had an important meeting and needed the room quiet.\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re sitting in your bedroom with a computer,\u201d Gwendolyn said, with a dismissive wave.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease stop acting as though you\u2019re running the Pentagon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Five years of marriage had taught Marisol that her mother-in-law rarely needed evidence before deciding whose needs mattered.<\/p>\n

But she did not yet understand, standing sweating in that hallway, that the thermostat was not the problem, and had never been the problem \u2014 that it was only the smallest visible edge of something that had been quietly costing her, for years, far more than the price of cooling half a house.<\/p>\n

She would understand it before the summer was out.<\/p>\n

It would cost her a marriage to learn.<\/p>\n

The strange thing, the thing she would marvel at later, was how small the trigger was in proportion to what it revealed.<\/p>\n

A thermostat.<\/p>\n
