Violet wiped her face.<\/p>\n

I looked down at Cecelia.<\/p>\n

Six months later, Violet sat on my living-room rug while Cecelia wrestled with a wooden block.<\/p>\n

Our relationship wasn\u2019t magically repaired.<\/p>\n

But it was healing.<\/p>\n

Violet asked before visiting now.<\/p>\n

She asked before picking Cecelia up.<\/p>\n

And when she missed Mark, she said she missed Mark instead of turning that grief into something Cecelia or I had to fix.<\/p>\n

That afternoon, Cecelia grabbed the block so tightly her knuckles turned white.<\/p>\n

Violet smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook at that grip.\u201d<\/p>\n

I laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust like Mark.\u201d<\/p>\n

Violet looked at me.<\/p>\n

Then she looked back at Cecelia.<\/p>\n

For a second, I saw the old instinct return.<\/p>\n

The need to find her son in every little thing our daughter did.<\/p>\n

Then Violet slowly shook her head.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

She gently touched Cecelia\u2019s tiny hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s hers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cecelia squealed and threw the block straight into Violet\u2019s lap.<\/p>\n

Violet laughed.<\/p>\n

So did I.<\/p>\n

And for the first time since Mark died, neither of us needed Cecelia to prove that he was still here.<\/p>\n

We could miss him.<\/p>\n

We could love him.<\/p>\n
