class="wp-block-paragraph">There had been another folded page tucked beneath the stiff bottom panel of the old diaper bag.

June told me later that they discovered it when we were packing some of their things before college.

I had pulled the battered diaper bag out of a storage box and laughed when Ava asked why I still had it.

“Because I paid too much for everything that replaced it,” I had joked.

Apparently, after I left the time one baby started crying, the other two seemed to follow, and he would stand there frozen because he had no idea which child needed him first.

He wrote that class="wp-block-paragraph">For years, I had imagined my brother leaving those babies on my doorstep because he had reached some desperate breaking point and chosen the nearest person he thought class="wp-block-paragraph">Claire sat down on the empty chair beside me.

Around us, graduates were beginning to shift toward the exits, families calling names and gathering purses, programs, flowers, and cameras.

But the four of us barely noticed.

I kept reading.

My brother wrote that he had watched me hold the girls before their mother died.

He remembered that Ava had stopped fussing when I bounced her against my shoulder.

He remembered Claire gripping my shirt.

He remembered June staring at me with those huge serious eyes she somehow still had twenty-two years later.

Then he wrote something I was not prepared for.

I know what this will cost you.

I pressed my thumb against the page.

Those words hit differently from the others.

He had known I had no savings worth mentioning.

He had known I was twenty-seven and still believed the rest of my life would them.

I read the rest of my brother’s letter.

Near the end, his handwriting grew messier.

He wrote that he did love the girls.

I believed that part.

Love and courage are not always the harder.

June stayed in front of me.

She had always been the one who could hold eye contact when everybody else wanted to that as another kind of absence.

Apparently, they had.

Claire walked over to a family standing nearby and asked if someone would take one photograph.

Ordering Family DNA Ancestry Kits

Then she came back and pushed me into the middle.

I immediately tried to move to the side.

Three hands stopped me.

“No,” Ava said.

“Middle,” Claire ordered.

“Stay,” June said.

That word got me.

I stayed.

The first picture was terrible because Ava started crying again.

The second was worse because I did.

In the third, June said something about my ancient camera, Claire laughed, and Ava leaned into me so hard I almost lost my balance.

It was the best picture we had ever taken.

After the ceremony, the four of us found a quieter spot away from the crowd.

Learning A New Language Online

I asked them what they wanted to do with the letter.

That was not really what I meant.

I was asking what they wanted to do with the man who wrote it.

His absence had filled a strange amount of space in our family without him ever being physically present.

June understood first.

“We don’t have to decide anything today.”

Claire nodded.

“We may never decide the same thing.”

Ava looked at her sisters.

“And that’s okay.”

I felt something inside me loosen.

I had raised triplets, but I had sometimes forgotten they were not one unit.

They had arrived together.

They had shared birthdays, bedrooms, schools, arguments, friends, clothes, and more than a few punishments.

But they were three women now.

Ava might someday want answers Claire did not.

Claire might forgive things June could not.

June might decide the past deserved no more of her time.

My job was no longer to choose for them.

Maybe it never had been.

My job was to be there when they chose.

That part I knew how to do.

Before we left, June folded the letter carefully along its old crease and handed it back to me.

I shook my head.

“It belongs to you.”

She shook hers.

“It belongs to all four of us.”

Claire took the camera case from my shoulder, opened the front pocket, and slid the folded pages inside.

Then she zipped it shut.

No display case.

No dramatic frame.

No attempt to turn my brother’s worst decision into some sacred family relic.

Ordering Family DNA Ancestry Kits

Just an old letter sitting beside spare batteries in the bag of a cheap camera.

That felt right.

Outside, the girls started arguing about where we were going to eat.

For several minutes, nobody could agree.

Ava wanted one thing.

Claire wanted another.

June insisted both choices were wrong.

I stood behind them listening to the exact same argument I had heard in one form or another since they were old enough to point at food.

And suddenly graduation did not feel like an ending.

It felt wonderfully ordinary.

Three daughters arguing.

One tired dad carrying the camera.

A folded letter no longer controlling the story.

A few weeks later, Claire had that graduation picture printed for me.

She did not put the letter beside it.

She did not add a quote.

She did not write some speech about sacrifice across the frame.

She simply handed me the photograph one evening when the girls were all home.

I turned it over.

On the back, each of them had written one line.

Ava: Thanks for staying.

Claire: Thanks for letting us become ourselves.

June: Stop correcting people when they call you our father.

I laughed so hard I had to sit down.

Then June took the picture from my hand and set it upright on the table.

Claire grabbed my old camera.

Ava complained that nobody was ready.

June ignored her, set the timer, and hurried back across the room.

This time, nobody pushed me to the edge of the frame.

Claire hooked one arm through mine.

Ava leaned against my shoulder.

June squeezed in on the other side just before the light started blinking.

The timer counted down.

The girls began laughing.

And when the shutter finally clicked, all three of them were calling me the same thing.

Dad.

At Graduation, My Three Daughters Read The
