He Never Read What He\u2019d Signed<\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"__reading__mode__mainbody__id\" class=\"__reading__mode__mainbody\">\n<div id=\"mainContainer\" class=\"__reading__mode__extracted__article__body\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<p><strong>Chapter 1 \u2014 Twenty-Eight Thousand<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One second, Camden was standing on the far side of our kitchen demanding twenty-eight thousand dollars for his mother\u2019s once-in-a-lifetime European tour.<\/p>\n<p>The next, the argument had gone somewhere neither of us could take back.<\/p>\n<p>His hand came down flat on the counter \u2014 not at me, but hard, the way a man hits a thing when he\u2019s used to the hitting settling an argument \u2014 and the motion knocked a full cup sideways.<\/p>\n<p>Hot tea went across the marble and across me, my blouse and one cheek, and then the room was very quiet, the particular quiet that follows a sound a house isn\u2019t supposed to make.<\/p>\n<p>It stung.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not going to spend paragraphs on it, because the burn is not the point of this story and I refuse to let it be \u2014 but it stung, a bright hot line along my cheekbone, and I would photograph it twice before the day was over, and it would end up mattering a great deal in a room with a judge in it.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t shout.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t fire anything back at him.<\/p>\n<p>I reached for a dish towel, and I pressed it to my face, and I cleaned the tea off the counter, and then I stood there and looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>And my silence, for reasons I would come to understand over the next twenty-four hours, seemed to unsettle Camden more than anything I could have screamed.<\/p>\n<p>I have thought since about why that was \u2014 why a man who had just thrown hot tea across his wife\u2019s face would be rattled not by what he\u2019d done but by her failure to react to it.<\/p>\n<p>And I think it\u2019s this: a fight is a transaction he knew how to win.<\/p>\n<p>If I had screamed, he could have escalated.<\/p>\n<p>If I had cried, he could have softened, become briefly gentle, made me grateful for the gentleness, and gotten his way by nightfall.<\/p>\n<p>If I had begged, he\u2019d have had exactly what he wanted.<\/p>\n<p>My silence gave him nothing to push against.<\/p>\n<p>He was a man who had spent seven years steering me with a very small set of levers \u2014 guilt, charm, the threat of his own displeasure \u2014 and he looked at me holding that dish towel to my cheek and saying nothing, and for the first time he could not find the lever.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cMy Wife Handles the Paperwork, I Handle the Assets,\u201d He Told the Contractor.
